About us
A bit of our story to begin with...
Marunaka was the name of our family company in Japan. Our father had wanted to pass on the company to one of his children, but unfortunately when the time came none of his four daughters were able to take over the business, and so it closed after 45 years of operation.
In 2021, that changed. We decided to re-establish our father’s business in Australia and to rekindle our father’s passion for innovation and invention in Australia.
The traditions and unique skills of Japanese craft work have been developed and perfected over centuries by Japan’s artisans, known as ‘shokunin’ (職人). Japanese believe in ‘kotodama’ (言霊), which refers to the mysterious power that dwells in words and names. Likewise, we believe that an object has a soul thanks to the dedication and devotion of the shokunin who creates it.
Marunaka Japan works directly with artisans from carefully selected studios across Japan’s culturally rich rural prefectures of Aomori, Ishikawa, Nagasaki and Saga, selecting a range of exquisite yet functional pieces that embody the spirit and tradition of Japanese artistry and embrace ‘monozukuri’ – the ultimate blend of technological prowess, know-how and spirit of Japan's manufacturing practices for the benefit of society.
We invite you and your loved ones to share in the depth of Japan’s culture, and enrich your everyday life with unique works of ceramic and glassware created by Japanese artisans with care, devotion and passion drawing on centuries of devotion.
As a gift to a loved one or to yourself, Marunaka Japan offers you the unique power and beauty of Japanese artistry.
