【What is Kutani ware?】
Kutani ware is a traditional Japanese handicraft that has been produced in Ishikawa since the early Edo period (early 1600s). Its prominent features are vivid colors, bright and elegant designs, and a particular overglaze painting technique. The artisans use five colors, which refer to the five Kutani colors (green, purple, red, yellow, and Prussian blue), to paint patterns over a glaze and fire the piece again. The pigments change their colors after the firing process. Kutani ware has three periods in its history: Ko-Kutani, Saiko-Kutani, and Kutani, and the designs and techniques have changed over time. All three periods of Kutani ware are highly valuable.
