Kintsugi Antique Bowl/Gold
【What is Tsugaru Kanayama ware?】
Kintsugi is a traditional Japanese technique that celebrates broken pottery. Rather than hiding cracks, artisans repair them using lacquer mixed with powdered gold or silver. This method transforms each piece into a unique work of art, highlighting its history and imperfections. The repaired lines create intricate patterns, and no two pieces are ever the same. Kintsugi embodies the philosophy of wabi-sabi, finding beauty in imperfection and embracing the passage of time.
【Product information】
The bowl features a classic Sometsuke (underglaze blue on white) design. Kikko (hexagons) represent "tortoise shells," a symbol of longevity and protection. Tsuru (cranes) are motifs for good fortune and a thousand years of life. This type of transfer ware or hand-finished porcelain was common from the late Meiji (1868–1912) to early Showa (early 20th century). The Kintsugi repair uses authentic gold and traditional urushi (lacquer), highlighting the beauty of imperfection and the piece’s history.
Kintsugi repair was completed in 2025.
